Faces of DUAL: Meet Moira Spencer

Welcome back to our Faces of DUAL interview series! This month, we’re thrilled to feature Moira Spencer, Regional Manager in the Northwest.
 
As we approach the launch of DUAL's Commercial Combined proposition, Moira talks us through what her team are working on, as well as what gigs she has planned for this year.

I'm Moira Spencer, Regional Manager in the Northwest.

My role is to expand our products and proposition into the regional market. I bring a lot of experience in this area, particularly in building teams. Teams that want to be part of a new, growing business that’s already highly successful. I’ve created a blueprint in Manchester, and I’m now taking that into the Leeds market, with plans to expand into Scotland next. It’s a super exciting role because it’s very different from what I’ve done previously.

Tell us a little about your career path…

I’ve been in insurance for a long time, too many years to mention in this short video! The highlights of my career have really been about finding a role that suits me. I actually started in underwriting, which might surprise some people watching this. I then moved into sales, where it quickly became clear that I had a strong skill in relationship building. From there, I took on various sales roles and eventually moved into trading. I went from poacher to gamekeeper; leading trading teams, and I really enjoyed it. 

People often say “sexy” and “insurance” don’t go together, but I believe if you find the area you’re really good at, the fact that it’s insurance becomes almost irrelevant.

What are you and your team working on currently?

Right now, my team and I are focused on being highly visible in the market. We’re speaking to brokers about the full range of DUAL products, both existing and new, and engaging with both long-standing and new broker relationships. We’re about to launch our Commercial Combined proposition in the coming weeks, and we’re actively out there talking about it. It’s a really exciting time at DUAL.

What makes DUAL stand out in the market?

DUAL stands out because we’re not generalists like much of the market. We have expert underwriters who excel at handling non-standard risks, those that aren’t just vanilla. 

But where we really add value is in our service proposition. We’ve delivered quotes within an hour of receiving a presentation, and bound the business just an hour later. That kind of speed and responsiveness is rare. Service is often talked about as a constant in the market, but it’s not always consistently good.; that’s where we lead and deliver. 

We also work closely with brokers to ensure we provide one quote to market that gives brokers confidence, especially when they’re trying to win new business; knowing our quote won’t pop up elsewhere and complicate things. It’s all about bringing our expert underwriters into broker regions and supporting them effectively.

Tell us what you like to do outside of DUAL…

I love music and going to concerts - my taste is pretty varied. This year I’ve seen Morrissey and Lionel Richie, and I’m going to see Fat Dog later this year. They’re a newer band we discovered at Glastonbury, and I’m curious to see how they perform live - they look amazing. 

I also love running. I’ve taught myself to run 5k and then 10k. It’s a great way to clear my head and reflect on the day. 

And finally, I love socialising with family and friends. I’ve got a big friendship group, and it’s lovely to spend time with them and there’s always lots of eating involved! Luckily, I can balance that out with the healthy side of my life through running. I have a busy social life and a busy work life, but for me, it’s all about balance.
